What goes around, comes around

Every year Australian TAFE teachers and trainers access professional development opportunities through an Australian Volunteers International’s volunteer assignment.

The recent study, The Right Person for the Job,  published by Australian Volunteers International (AVI) and Monash University, found that while working with developing communities, AVI volunteers acquired skills that are in increasing demand in Australian workplaces.

These skills include:

  • interpersonal, communication and teamwork skills
  • cross-cultural communication skills
  • organisational and management skills
  • problem solving skills.

Dr Ian McDonald, manages the recruitment of Australians for AVI’s international volunteer assignments for skilled trade and trades training professionals.

“International volunteering is really a win – win situation,” Dr McDonald said. “Australians with experience in skilled trades, teacher training or mentoring others are in great demand in overseas communities throughout Asia, the Pacific, Africa and the Middle East.  In return, they find that the experience provides new career opportunities back in Australia.”
