skills recognition logoNew tool gives RPL head start

RESOURCE | Paula Johnson

A new free self evaluation tool to help students be better prepared for recognition of prior learning (RPL) has just been launched on the revamped website skillsrecognition.nsw.gov.au. And work has already started on making it even better!

Funding of up to $5000 is available for organisations to form small groups of RPL candidates to try out the new tool in February/ March 2009 . Their experiences will then help design the next round of enhancements to the tool.  Everyone is encouraged to give direct feedback via the site, but why not put up your hand for the chance to be paid to help the site to help you!

Online applications close on 18 December 2008, so get all the info now at skillsrecognition.nsw.gov.au/funding.

The new self evaluation tool allows potential RPL candidates to build a list of possible competencies they already have, see qualifications that might match and get a list of NSW registered training organisations (RTOs) that offer the qualification/s they’re interested in.

Not only can this increase RPL business for RTOs by helping students find them, they’ll also arrive with a realistic understanding of the skills recognition process and their readiness for it. Assessment will still need to be conducted by an RTO, but students will have taken the first step of considering their competencies and qualifications they might aim for - saving everyone’s time!

Micro-sites are also available at skillsrecognition.nsw.gov.au for RTOS and employers. Teachers and trainers will find a myth busting RPL quiz and links to forums and networks. Success stories are presented to encourage enterprises to include skills recognition as part of their workforce development plans.

Get involved and encourage users to be part of the feedback loop that will keep improving the site. And help make RPL easier for everyone!
